The googly is a cricket delivery bowled by a right arm leg spin bowler. The bowler will bowl the ball so that it looks like a normal leg spin delivery – but once it lands it turns in the opposite direction than expected, from off-side to leg-side instead of from leg-side to off-side.
The googly was invented by an English cricket player call Bernard Bosanquet.
To bowl the googly is essentially the same as to bowl a leg-break. Everyting will be the same, including the run-up, grip, action and follow through. The only exception is the wrist angle at the point of release.
The turn is still generated in the action. The non-bowling arm must pull your body forward and after the release your bowling shoulder must point to the batsman. This will ensure that you turn your body in the action and thus generate more turn and bounce with the googly.
The reason the wrist is changed is because the ball must be bowled out of the back of the hand. In the normal leg-spin delivery the palm will face the batsman. With the googly the wrist must be turned so that palm faces back to the bowler at the point of release.
For the googly the seam of the ball should still run up-right and be aimed at a leg-slip region.
The best line and length for the googly will be at a driving length for the batsman. He will expect the ball to spin away but it will surprise him by cutting back. He might just leave a gap between bat and pad and you can bowl him through the gate. The other line of attack with the googly is slightly shorter and wider. You want to batsman to rock on the back foot and look to cut you. He will expect the ball to spin away and sit up nicely to be smashed. However, because the ball will be spinning back he will be cramped for space and will most likely chop the ball onto his stumps.
Lastly, remember to practise to googly by alternating with your normal leg-break. Do not spend weeks only practising the googly. You might end up ‘losing’ your normal stock leg-spin delivery. Practise both and develop both over time.
